CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A man’s three-day struggle to survive a gunshot wound has ended in tragedy, as 31-year-old Luis Daniel Gutierrez Mora became Charlotte’s latest homicide victim, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Mora succumbed to his injuries at a hospital on Tuesday, police confirmed in a March 25 news release.
Officers initially responded around 2 a.m. Sunday to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 5800 block of Albemarle Road, near its intersection with Central Avenue in east Charlotte. When they arrived, they found Mora suffering from critical injuries. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where medical staff worked to save his life over the following days.
Despite those efforts, Mora passed away Tuesday, prompting homicide detectives to intensify their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Authorities have not released information regarding a suspect or a possible motive.
Investigators continue to canvass the area, review surveillance footage, and speak with potential witnesses as they work to piece together what led to the early morning violence. The neighborhood, typically active even during late hours, may hold key information that could assist detectives in solving the case.
CMPD is urging anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward. Tips can be provided by calling 704-432-8477 (TIPS) to speak directly with a Homicide Unit detective. As the investigation continues, family and friends mourn the loss of Mora, whose life was cut short by senseless violence.
