Tragic Fall Turns Fatal, 84-Year-Old Carl Holter Dies After Injuries at Mauthe Lake Campground.
A heartbreaking incident in Fond du Lac County has ended in tragedy as authorities confirmed the passing of 84-year-old Carl Holter of West Bend, who died from injuries sustained in a fall at Mauthe Lake Campground. What began as a medical emergency on a quiet Sunday afternoon has now become a somber reminder of how quickly life can change.
According to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office, deputies initially responded to a 911 call around 4:59 p.m. on March 29 reporting that an elderly man had fallen on a trail near the campground’s boat launch area. Emergency crews arrived to find Holter suffering from severe facial injuries after reportedly falling onto a compacted gravel surface while walking.
Due to the seriousness of his condition, a Flight for Life helicopter was called to the scene. The Kewaskum Fire Department quickly established a landing zone along the campground entrance road, which was temporarily closed for approximately an hour to allow for safe transport. Holter was then airlifted to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee for urgent medical care.
Despite the swift and coordinated response from multiple emergency agencies, including Campbellsport Ambulance, Kewaskum Fire Department, and West Bend Ambulance, Holter later succumbed to his injuries.
The loss of Carl Holter has left family, friends, and the community mourning. While few details have been released beyond the circumstances of the fall, the incident serves as a reminder of the risks that can accompany even routine outdoor activities.
