Barbara Deer and Kaleb Deer Found Dead in Family Home.
CHICAGO — Barbara Deer, 54, and her 23-year-old son Kaleb Deer were found dead inside their West Side home Tuesday night in a devastating incident that has stunned the city and left a long legacy of public service and community leadership overshadowed by grief and unanswered questions. Police confirmed the discovery at the family residence in the 3500 block of West Arthington Street after concerns were raised by neighbors who noticed the family dog outside for several hours.
According to officials, Chicago Police and Fire Department personnel entered the home just before 6 p.m. After forcing entry, they located both victims in the basement. Barbara Deer was found suffering from three gunshot wounds to the chest, while Kaleb Deer had been shot in the head. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities also recovered a firearm, and the investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to determine the circumstances surrounding the double homicide.
The tragedy comes just months after the family was already shaken by the death of former Cook County Commissioner Dennis Deer, Barbara’s husband and Kaleb’s father, who died in June 2024 at age 51 following complications from a genetic condition. Dennis Deer was widely known for his work in mental health advocacy, public service, and community justice reform in Chicago.
Barbara Deer herself was a respected speech language pathologist, nonprofit leader, and healthcare advocate who dedicated her career to education and mental health access. Kaleb, one of the couple’s twin sons, is being remembered by those close to the family as part of a close-knit household deeply rooted in service and community engagement.
Outside the home, a heavy police presence and grieving neighbors reflected the shock felt across the neighborhood. As investigators continue their work, Chicago mourns a family whose lives were deeply tied to public service and community healing, now marked by an unimaginable tragedy.
