The Columbia community is grieving the loss of Qwa’Maurie A. Deaver, an 18-year-old whose life ended following a violent series of events that unfolded during the early morning hours of Thursday. His passing has left family, friends, classmates, and community members mourning a young life lost far too soon.
According to the Richland County Coroner’s Office, Deaver was identified as the individual who died after an incident in the Summit Ridge Drive area involving deputies from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department. The tragedy occurred after law enforcement responded to multiple reports of gunfire in residential neighborhoods throughout the night.
Authorities stated that the first incident occurred shortly after midnight on Sagamare Road, where deputies investigated reports of shots fired. Although no injuries were reported, investigators discovered that bullets had struck a home and several vehicles. A short time later, deputies responded to another shooting on Spring Oak Drive, where a residence was also damaged by gunfire. Detectives believe the incidents may be connected and immediately began searching for those involved.
As part of the investigation, K9 teams tracked a scent to a residence on Legend Oaks. According to officials, deputies identified themselves and gave commands before coming under gunfire from multiple individuals outside the home. Deputies took cover and returned fire as the situation escalated. Additional law enforcement personnel later arrived and secured the scene.
When the incident ended, one individual had been taken into custody and another was found dead. The Richland County Coroner’s Office later confirmed that the deceased was Qwa’Maurie A. Deaver.
While investigators continue working to determine the full sequence of events, many in Columbia are focused on honoring the memory of a young man whose future was just beginning. At only 18 years old, Deaver was entering a new chapter of life filled with possibilities, ambitions, and hopes for the future.
