Late-Night Tragedy in Bessemer, 22-Year-Old Carlos Sumpter Jr. Killed in Weekend Shooting.
A sense of grief and concern has settled over the city of Bessemer following the tragic loss of 22-year-old Carlos Sumpter Jr., who was killed in a late-night shooting over the weekend. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed Sumpter, a local resident, as the victim of the incident that has now become part of the city’s growing homicide count.
According to authorities, the shooting occurred at approximately 11:18 p.m. on Saturday in the 300 block of 30th Street South. Responding officers arrived to find Sumpter lying in front of a residence with fatal injuries. Despite the rapid response, he was pronounced dead at the scene just 30 minutes later, at 11:48 p.m.
Bessemer Police Detective Justin Burmeister stated that the circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under investigation. While one person has been taken into custody, officials have not yet filed formal charges, leaving many questions unanswered as investigators continue their work.
The loss of Carlos Sumpter Jr. marks Bessemer’s fourth homicide of the year, contributing to a total of 17 homicides recorded across Jefferson County so far. The rising numbers have sparked concern among residents, who are calling for answers and increased efforts to address violence in the community.
