Police Fatally Shoot Armed Man After Gunfire Erupts.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A normally \u10db\u10e8\u10d5\u10d8\u10d3 residential area in Hickory, North Carolina, was shaken by violence Friday morning after a tense and dangerous situation ended in a fatal police shooting. Authorities have confirmed that a 64-year-old man, identified as James Andrew Thompson, was killed after allegedly opening fire in his neighborhood and later confronting officers.<\/p>\n

The incident unfolded around 8:30 a.m. on April 3 at a home on Fifth Street Southeast, near the corner of Third Avenue Southeast\u2014just minutes from downtown Hickory. According to police, the situation began when a woman called authorities, reporting that her husband was armed and intended to harm himself. What followed quickly escalated into a threat to others.<\/p>\n

Neighbors soon contacted 911, reporting that Thompson had stepped onto his porch and was firing shots at passing vehicles. During the chaos, one driver was struck by gunfire. Fortunately, the victim survived and is currently listed in stable condition at a local hospital.<\/p>\n

When officers arrived on the scene, they issued multiple commands for Thompson to drop his weapon. Police say he refused to comply and instead pointed the gun at responding officers. Faced with an immediate threat, officers opened fire, fatally shooting him at the home.<\/p>\n

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to conduct an independent review of the incident, as is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.<\/p>\n
