Tragic Loss on Cane Run Road, 16-Year-Old Central High Student Killed in Early Morning Accident.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A heartbreaking tragedy struck early Tuesday morning when 16-year-old Janiah Brown, a student at Central High School, was fatally struck while attempting to cross Cane Run Road near Teakwood Circle in St. Denis. The accident occurred just before 7 a.m., in the dark, and outside a designated crosswalk.
According to police reports, Brown was hit by both a passenger vehicle and an SUV. Authorities initially reported involvement of a semi-truck, but later clarified that the semi was not involved. Emergency responders pronounced Brown dead at the scene.
Jefferson County Public Schools expressed deep sorrow over the loss, releasing a statement: “It is with a heavy heart that we share news of a loss within our Yellow Jacket family. We ask that you keep the student’s family, friends, and our entire school community in your thoughts as we support one another.” The statement also noted that the JCPS Crisis Response Team and school-based mental health professionals would be available to provide support and resources to students and staff in the wake of this tragedy.
Regarding safety concerns, JCPS confirmed there are no plans to relocate bus stops along Cane Run Road. Officials emphasized that no student is assigned to a stop requiring them to cross four lanes of traffic and explained that in two-lane sections, buses use stop arms and assist students in safely crossing.
The community now mourns the loss of a bright young life, and local authorities urge all drivers to exercise caution, particularly during early morning hours when visibility is limited.
