Gabriel Lorenzo Beauford Killed in Polk County Semi-Truck Crash, Timber Load Collision Turns Fatal on US 98.
A tragic crash involving two semi-trucks in northern Polk County has claimed the life of 44-year-old Gabriel Lorenzo Beauford, leaving a somber reminder of the dangers faced on busy highways. The fatal incident occurred on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, approximately ten miles north of Lakeland at the intersection of US 98 North and State Road 471.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the scene around 10:50 a.m. Upon arrival, first responders found Beauford deceased inside the cab of his 2008 Volvo semi-tractor with a trailer. The driver of the second vehicle, a 34-year-old man from Ocala operating a 2023 Mack truck hauling timber, was not injured.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Beauford was traveling southbound on US 98 behind the timber truck. As the Mack truck slowed and entered a left turn lane to head east onto SR 471, it appears Beauford did not notice the change in speed. His truck collided with the load of timber extending from the rear of the trailer.
The impact was catastrophic, as large pieces of timber penetrated the cab of Beauford’s truck, causing fatal injuries. The collision also resulted in damage to the trailer and the release of some hazardous materials, prompting a coordinated response from Polk County Fire Rescue, the Department of Environmental Protection, the Department of Transportation, and local road maintenance crews.
Authorities confirmed the timber load was properly secured and in compliance with safety regulations. The roadway remained closed for nearly seven hours as crews worked to clear the scene. The investigation remains ongoing, though no charges are expected.
