A heartbreaking tragedy has left a Texas community in mourning after 17-year-old Samuel Hernandez lost his life in a canal accident in rural North Mercedes. According to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred Sunday evening near Mile 1 West and Mile 10, when Samuel entered the water in an attempt to free a stuck fishing line.
Deputies responded around 7:44 p.m. after receiving reports that a teenage boy had jumped into the canal and failed to resurface. Witnesses at the scene shared that Samuel had been warned not to enter the water but chose to help anyway. They described a desperate struggle, as he surfaced three times before disappearing beneath the water. One witness attempted to reach him with a pole, but tragically, Samuel was unable to grab hold.
Search and recovery efforts involved multiple agencies, including the Texas Department of Public Safety dive team and the Mercedes Fire Department. On Monday morning, Samuel’s body was recovered, bringing a somber end to the search.
The loss has deeply impacted the Progreso Independent School District community, where Samuel was a student at Progreso High School. Described as a cherished member of the “Red Ant” family, his passing has left classmates, teachers, and staff grieving. Counseling services have been made available to support those affected.
Sheriff J.E. “Eddie” Guerra emphasized the dangers of canals, urging the public to exercise extreme caution and never enter such waters. As investigations continue, Samuel Hernandez is remembered for his bravery and selflessness, a young life gone far too soon.
