Mystery Surrounds Teen’s Death, No Arrests Yet as Investigation into McKenna Wendel Case Continues.
Authorities in South Dakota are continuing their investigation into the tragic death of 14-year-old McKenna Wendel, whose body was discovered days after she was reported missing from her grandparents’ home in Sioux Falls. As of now, no arrests have been made, and officials say many critical questions remain unanswered.
McKenna was reported missing on the morning of March 15 after she was last seen around 1:30 a.m. on March 14. The search for the young teen ended in heartbreak on March 19, when her body was found in rural Brookings County, just east of the city of Brookings—approximately an hour from where she had been staying.
During a press conference, Sioux Falls Police Lt. Terrance Matia emphasized the uncertainty surrounding the case. “I have no suspect of any crime yet, the autopsy is not complete,” he said. “I don’t know what the manner of death is.” He further clarified that authorities have not officially determined whether McKenna’s death was the result of foul play, urging caution as the investigation continues.
Officials have released limited information, explaining that withholding certain details is necessary to protect the integrity of the case and any potential future prosecution. An autopsy is currently underway and is expected to provide more clarity regarding the cause and manner of her death.
