GRAYSON, Ga. — Forty-four-year-old Sharell Canty was tragically found shot to death inside a home in unincorporated Grayson on Thursday morning, and 48-year-old Stephany Byrom has since been charged in connection with the deadly incident, according to Gwinnett County police.
Authorities said officers responded shortly before 9 a.m. to the 300 block of Wilkerson Way after a neighbor contacted police regarding a concerning situation at the residence. When officers arrived, they discovered Canty deceased inside the home and immediately launched a death investigation.
Following several hours of investigation, Gwinnett County police confirmed the shooting is believed to be domestic-related. Investigators later arrested Stephany Byrom, who now faces charges including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
The quiet Grayson neighborhood was left shaken as police vehicles, ambulances, and crime scene tape surrounded the area throughout the morning and afternoon. Neighbors described the scene as deeply unsettling in a community typically known for being peaceful and calm.
“All I saw was a bunch of police cars surrounded the area and an ambulance and yellow tape on the house,” neighbor Jordyn Stallworth told reporters. “It was really just a crazy situation.”
Police officials noted that violent incidents of this nature are rare for the area. Sgt. Jennifer Richter with the Gwinnett County Police Department stated that the neighborhood generally experiences low crime activity and very few death investigations.
As the investigation continues, loved ones and community members are mourning the loss of Sharell Canty while grappling with the emotional impact the tragedy has had on the neighborhood. Authorities say additional details may be released as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
