A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken Alaska’s Mat-Su Valley following a fatal ATV rollover involving 32-year-old Wasilla resident Hannah Lebel. The devastating crash claimed the life of a 10-year-old child and left three other juveniles injured on Thursday evening in the Jim Creek Recreation Area. What began as an outdoor recreational outing ended in unimaginable sorrow, leaving families and community members grieving the loss of a young life.
According to Alaska State Troopers, the incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. when a side-by-side vehicle driven by Lebel and carrying four juveniles rolled over onto its roof. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene after reports of injuries. Before first responders arrived, bystanders immediately began life-saving efforts for the unresponsive child. Medical personnel continued those efforts upon reaching the scene, but despite everyone’s best attempts, the child was pronounced deceased.
The three other juveniles involved in the rollover were transported to a Mat-Su area hospital for treatment. Authorities reported that their injuries were non-life-threatening, though the emotional trauma from the incident will likely have lasting effects on the victims, their families, and the broader community.
During the investigation, troopers reported observing signs of impairment from the driver. Further investigation allegedly determined that Lebel was intoxicated at the time of the rollover. She was subsequently arrested and charged with criminally negligent homicide, manslaughter, assault, and driving under the influence.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine all factors that contributed to the crash. Meanwhile, the community mourns the tragic loss of a child whose life ended far too soon in this devastating incident.
