The Smithfield community is reeling after the tragic death of 39-year-old Lorena Capera Paz, who was found fatally wounded in the parking lot of an industrial plant early Thursday morning. Authorities have charged her husband, Jesus Bermudez, with first-degree murder in connection with the heartbreaking incident.
According to the Smithfield Police Department, officers responded at approximately 5:00 a.m. to AAF Flanders, an air filtration manufacturing facility located on Wal-Pat Road. Upon arrival, they discovered Lorena Capera Paz suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot. Despite emergency efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators immediately launched an intensive investigation, interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence from the area. Just a few hours later, around 9:00 a.m., officers located and arrested him at his residence on Galilee Road in Smithfield without incident.
Bermudez is currently being held at the Johnston County Detention Center without bond. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Friday, where prosecutors are expected to outline the charges against him.
