Justice Eluded: Ohio Doctor Dies by Suicide Days Before Arraignment for Child Trafficking

Justice Eluded, Ohio Doctor Dies by Suicide Days Before Arraignment for Child Trafficking.

The legal proceedings against Dr. Francis J. Kearse III, a 43-year-old physician from West Chester, Ohio, have come to an abrupt and final halt. On Friday, March 27, just four days before he was scheduled to face a judge for a string of heinous felonies, Kearse was found deceased. The Butler County Coroner’s Office has since confirmed the cause of death as self-inflicted.

The Charges and Allegations

Kearse was facing a litany of charges in Hamilton County that painted a disturbing picture of exploitation, including:

  • Trafficking in persons

  • Compelling prostitution (including charges involving a minor)

  • Importuning

Prosecutors alleged that Kearse leveraged his status to lure young girls into so-called “sugar daddy” relationships. Specifically, an affidavit detailed an encounter with a 16-year-old girl in Cincinnati, where Kearse allegedly exchanged two vape pens and $15 for sexual activity.

A Failure of Custody

Despite the severity of the charges, Kearse was released on a cashless bond following his March 11 arrest. Judge Christopher McDowell noted that both the court and the prosecution had advocated for Kearse to remain in custody. Instead, he was released with orders to avoid social media platforms like Snapchat. Upon learning of the suicide, Judge McDowell remarked that Kearse “escaped justice the hard way,” subsequently dismissing the Hamilton County case.

A Legacy of Unanswered Questions

The impact of Kearse’s death extends beyond a single courtroom. Butler County Prosecutor Mike Gmoser confirmed that additional investigations were poised to move forward just as news of the death arrived.

While the legal charges die with the defendant, the trauma inflicted upon the victims remains. A licensed physician trusted by his community, Kearse leaves behind a legacy of alleged exploitation that will now never be scrutinized by a jury of his peers.
