A tragic multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 24 West near Nashville has claimed the life of 18-year-old Talon Sewell, while 18-year-old driver Zachary Abbott of Trenton now faces serious charges, including vehicular homicide by intoxication. The devastating collision occurred Monday night around 10:20 p.m. near Old Hickory Boulevard, leaving multiple people injured and a community in mourning.
According to preliminary investigations, Abbott was driving a GMC Yukon westbound on I-24 when he attempted to change lanes to pass traffic but was unable to do so safely. This triggered a dangerous chain of events as the vehicle moved onto the right shoulder, where it collided with an abandoned flatbed tow truck. The force of the crash caused a series of additional collisions involving several vehicles, including a Jeep Wrangler, Nissan Sentra, and Toyota Camry.
During the violent impact, Sewell, who was seated in the front passenger seat, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Abbott and a rear passenger sustained minor injuries and were transported to Skyline Medical Center for treatment. The driver of the Jeep Wrangler and her four children were also injured but later released after receiving care.
Authorities reported detecting the odor of alcohol on Abbott’s breath, along with other signs of impairment. He has since been taken into custody and remains jailed on a $100,000 bond as the investigation continues.
The tragic loss of Talon Sewell serves as a painful reminder of the consequences of impaired driving and reckless decisions on the road.
