A heartbreaking tragedy has left a community in mourning after 7-year-old Abel Friday was pronounced dead following a drowning incident at Bruce Meisner Park. What began as an urgent call for a child in distress quickly turned into a devastating loss that has shaken family, friends, and the wider community.
Emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 6:52 p.m. after reports of a child in the water at the park, located near Lake Hickory. Responders arrived to find Abel submerged roughly 10 feet deep. He was quickly pulled from the water, and lifesaving efforts began immediately as he was rushed to Frye Regional Medical Center.
Despite the tireless efforts of medical staff, Abel Friday was pronounced dead at the hospital. The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, working to understand what led to the tragedy that unfolded that evening.
