A tragic incident on the east side of South Bend has left one woman dead and another in custody, as authorities work to piece together the events surrounding a fatal crash in a local parking lot. Police have identified Deborah Leyba, 61, as the individual arrested in connection with the case.

According to officials, officers were called just after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday to a business in the 3600 block of Edison Road following reports of a woman lying unresponsive in the parking lot. When emergency responders arrived, they located an adult female at the scene. Despite efforts to assist her, she was pronounced dead on site. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity as they continue their investigation and notify next of kin.

Police say that after the initial response, investigators worked to identify and track down a vehicle believed to be involved in the crash. Several hours later, they located the suspect vehicle, which ultimately led to Deborah Leyba’s arrest. She was taken into custody without incident and transported to the St. Joseph County Jail.

At this time, Leyba is awaiting a formal charging decision from the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office. The St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team is leading the investigation, working to determine the exact circumstances that led to the deadly incident.

As the case develops, the South Bend community is left mourning the loss of an unidentified victim while awaiting answers and accountability.
