A community in Marana is mourning the devastating loss of Mikaela Durfey and Brian Schnurr, whose lives ended in a tragic incident on Memorial Day that has left family, friends, and loved ones in deep sorrow. The heartbreaking event has also drawn attention to the couple’s two young children, who were found physically unharmed but now face an uncertain future after the loss of both parents.
According to the Marana Police Department, officers responded around 5:00 p.m. on May 25 to reports of a shooting at a residence on West Alegria Drive. Upon arrival, they discovered Durfey suffering from a gunshot wound in the driveway, where she was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators quickly identified her ex-husband, Schnurr, as the suspect and launched a search for his vehicle, a blue Dodge Challenger. The vehicle was later located near North Silverbell Road, where officers safely recovered the couple’s children from inside. Shortly afterward, Schnurr was found in a nearby desert area with what authorities described as a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was also pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary findings indicate the incident is being investigated as a murder-suicide. Court records show Durfey had filed for divorce in July 2025, though officials have not released further details about what led to the tragedy.
As the investigation continues, the community is left grieving a profound loss while holding onto memories of Mikaela Durfey and offering support to the children whose lives have been forever changed.
