Deadly Dispute in Surrey, Homicide Investigators Probe Death of 34-Year-Old Matthew Neely.
A quiet Surrey neighborhood has been shaken by tragedy after a man succumbed to injuries sustained during a violent and still-unfolding incident Wednesday night. Authorities have identified the victim as 34-year-old Matthew Neely, whose death has now prompted a full-scale homicide investigation led by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT).
Surrey Police Service officers were called to assist BC Emergency Health Services at approximately 9:10 p.m. near 134 Street and 97 Avenue. When first responders arrived, they found Neely suffering from serious injuries. Despite urgent medical intervention and life-saving efforts, he was transported to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead, leaving behind unanswered questions and a grieving community.
Investigators say early findings suggest the incident may have stemmed from a verbal dispute, though the exact circumstances that escalated the situation into deadly violence remain unclear. What began as words exchanged in the night appears to have spiraled into a fatal confrontation, cutting short a life and leaving a lasting mark on those who knew him.
IHIT spokesperson Sgt. Freda Fong emphasized the importance of understanding Neely’s final movements, noting that establishing a clear timeline is critical to uncovering what led to his death. Authorities are urging anyone who had recent contact with him or who may have been in the area between 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. to come forward.
As investigators continue their work, the community is left grappling with the sudden and tragic loss, a stark reminder of how quickly conflict can turn fatal.
