The Indianapolis community is mourning the tragic and heartbreaking loss of Brett Scrogham, 23, a recent graduate of Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business whose promising future was cut short in what city leaders have described as a random act of violence.
According to authorities, the shooting occurred around 6 p.m. Thursday in a parking garage across the street from the Indiana Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but despite efforts to save him, Brett lost his life. Investigators continue working to identify and apprehend those responsible.
The loss has sent shockwaves through the community, particularly among Brett’s family, friends, former classmates, and colleagues. Having recently graduated from one of Indiana University’s most respected business programs, Brett had already begun building the future he worked so hard to achieve. Friends say he had recently secured a job in Indianapolis and was excited about the opportunities that lay ahead.
One close friend shared that he first met Brett during an eighth-grade robotics tournament before reconnecting with him in college. Over the years, the two developed a strong friendship built around shared passions for cars, business, entrepreneurship, and real estate. Those who knew Brett describe him as intelligent, ambitious, driven, and someone who genuinely enjoyed helping others succeed.
Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett called the killing a “random act” of violence and expressed condolences to Brett’s loved ones. He emphasized that violence against innocent people has no place in the community and pledged support for the ongoing investigation.
As detectives continue searching for answers, many are remembering Brett not for the way he died, but for the life he lived and the bright future that was ahead of him. His memory will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
