The victim of the recent terrorist attack at Old Dominion University has been identified as Brandon Shah, a highly decorated U.S. Army officer and respected professor who dedicated much of his life to serving his country and mentoring the next generation of military leaders. Shah, who held the rank of lieutenant colonel, served as Professor of Military Science and led the university’s ROTC program, where he played a crucial role in shaping future officers.
Lt. Col. Shah’s military career was marked by courage, leadership, and sacrifice. Over the years, he deployed to several overseas missions, including Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Atlantic Resolve. Through these deployments, he served in dangerous combat environments and worked alongside fellow service members to protect national and global security.
His service was recognized with numerous prestigious military awards. Among them were two Bronze Stars, a distinction awarded for heroic or meritorious achievement in a combat zone. He also received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal with Valor, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal, among others. In addition, Shah earned specialized qualifications such as the Senior Army Aviator Badge, Combat Action Badge, Parachutist Badge, and Air Assault Badge—testaments to both his skill and dedication.
Friends, colleagues, and students at Old Dominion University described him as a leader who cared deeply about his cadets and worked tirelessly to guide them toward successful military careers. Many said he was admired not only for his decorated service but also for his humility, discipline, and commitment to mentorship.
The tragedy has left the university community and military family grieving the loss of a man who survived the dangers of war abroad, only to be killed in violence at home. Lt. Col. Brandon Shah’s legacy of service, courage, and leadership will continue to inspire those who knew him and those who follow in his footsteps.
