Hidden in the Sky: The Tragic Deaths of Two Dominican Teens Found in a Plane’s Wheel Well.
Fort Lauderdale, Florida — January 7, 2025 — What began as a routine aircraft inspection at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport turned into a heartbreaking discovery that would span countries and leave two families in mourning. Airline workers inspecting a JetBlue plane found two bodies concealed inside the aircraft’s landing gear compartment — a place never meant for human survival.
The victims were later identified through DNA testing as 16-year-old Elvis Borquez Castillo and 18-year-old Jeik Anilus Lusi, both from the Dominican Republic. Investigators revealed that the teenagers had attempted to stow away in the plane’s wheel well, likely hoping for a chance at a better future. Instead, they entered an environment with no oxygen, no warmth, and no possibility of survival at cruising altitude.
The aircraft had traveled multiple routes, including stops in the Dominican Republic, New York, Jamaica, Salt Lake City, and finally Fort Lauderdale. During those flights, the conditions inside the wheel well would have become fatal — with freezing temperatures and dangerously low oxygen levels. Authorities confirmed the cause of death as asphyxiation combined with extreme exposure.
The teens’ mothers, Margarita Luisi Elisma and Ironelis Castillo, initially recognized their sons through photographs before DNA confirmation in April 2025 made the loss official. Investigators, including the Broward Sheriff’s Office, extended their work to the Dominican Republic in an effort to understand how the boys gained access to the aircraft.
Their story is one of desperation, risk, and unimaginable loss — a reminder of the dangers hidden behind such decisions.
