Tragedy After Morning Blaze, 56-Year-Old Man Found Dead in Collapsed Mobile Home Fire in Orwell.
A tragic house fire in the rural community of Orwell has left one man dead and authorities working to determine what caused the devastating blaze. According to the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 15, to reports of a fire at a mobile home located at 197 Durgee Road.
When emergency crews arrived at the scene, they found that the mobile home had already collapsed as a result of the intense fire. Firefighters and investigators quickly began searching through the debris, fearing someone might have been inside at the time the flames tore through the structure.
During the preliminary investigation, authorities confirmed that there had been one occupant inside the home when the fire broke out. Tragically, that individual was discovered beneath the wreckage. Officials later identified the victim as 56-year-old Joseph Thompson.
The discovery brought a somber tone to the emergency response, as crews carefully worked through the remains of the structure. While the exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined, investigators say there are currently no signs suggesting foul play. However, the case remains under active investigation as officials continue examining the circumstances that led to the deadly blaze.
Multiple agencies assisted in the response and investigation, including the Orwell Volunteer Fire Department, the Oswego County Fire Coordinator’s Office, the Oswego County District Attorney’s Office, and Menter Ambulance.
As investigators continue working to determine the cause of the fire, the small community of Orwell is left mourning the loss of Joseph Thompson, whose life ended in a sudden and devastating tragedy inside his own home.
