Anchorage Police Shooting, Officer Identified After Gunfire Exchange and Fatal House Fire.
Authorities in Anchorage have identified the police officer involved in a tense and still-developing incident that ended with a fatality and a house fire in the Bayshore/Klatt area early Saturday morning. According to the Anchorage Police Department, Officer Jacob Jones discharged his weapon during an encounter with 43-year-old Micah Bonin.
Police say the incident unfolded at a residence along the 12000 block of Shore Circle, where Bonin was reportedly firing at officers from inside the home. In response, Officer Jones fired his weapon. However, authorities have not confirmed whether Bonin was struck by police gunfire or provided details on the exact cause of his death. The situation escalated further when the home caught fire, ultimately resulting in Bonin’s death.
Property records indicate that Bonin was a co-owner of the South Anchorage residence. Officials have yet to clarify what led to the confrontation or the sequence of events that resulted in the exchange of gunfire. These details are expected to be addressed in a forthcoming news conference.
Officer Jones, who joined the department in 2016, has been involved in two prior on-duty shootings. He currently serves as a K-9 handler on the night shift, a time period officials note accounts for a significant portion of officer-involved shootings. Following standard protocol, he has been placed on administrative leave.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging patience while they work to provide clarity on this complex and tragic incident.
