Northwest D.C. Homicide Case, Suspect Arrested After Man Found Dead in Burned Apartment.
WASHINGTON — Authorities have made a significant arrest in connection with a disturbing homicide that occurred earlier this year in Northwest Washington, D.C., where a man was found dead inside a burned apartment. The case, which has drawn considerable attention, continues to unfold as investigators work to uncover the full circumstances behind the crime.
According to officials, the incident dates back to the early morning of February 11, 2026, when D.C. Fire and EMS responded to reports of smoke in a hallway at an apartment building in the 1400 block of Rhode Island Avenue NW. Firefighters entered the unit, extinguished a small fire, and discovered an adult male unconscious and not breathing. The victim had suffered both blunt force trauma and thermal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim was later identified as 40-year-old Syed Hammad Hussain, a resident of Northwest D.C. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled his death a homicide, determining that he died from blunt force trauma and strangulation. Investigators also concluded that the fire was deliberately set after his death, suggesting an attempt to conceal the crime.
On March 30, 2026, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 36-year-old Rico Barnes in connection with the case. He has been charged with first-degree murder while armed, including felony murder charges. Authorities have also identified a second suspect, currently in custody on unrelated charges.
While police believe no additional suspects are involved, details about a motive remain unknown as the investigation continues.
