What began as concern for a missing child has turned into a deeply disturbing homicide case in Escambia County, where authorities say a 5-year-old boy was found dead under tragic circumstances. On February 6, 2026, deputies responded to a report of a suspicious object along the shoreline of Perdido Bay near Lillian Highway. Upon arrival, they discovered the body of young Jakaiden Smith inside a black trash bag, wrapped in blankets and towels.
Investigators later revealed that the child had not been reported missing prior to the discovery. Concern was initially raised by a family member who had not heard from him, prompting authorities to begin looking into his whereabouts. The case quickly escalated as more details emerged.
An autopsy determined that Jakaiden was severely malnourished and dehydrated, weighing only 20 pounds at the time of his death. Medical examiners indicated the condition was consistent with prolonged neglect or starvation, adding a deeply troubling dimension to the case.
Authorities identified the child’s mother, Jalynda Karie Smith, as a suspect and later located her in Gulf Breeze. Surveillance footage showed her abandoning her vehicle a day earlier and leaving in a ride-share. Investigators also found that her phone and iPad had been factory reset shortly before her arrest.
On March 26, a grand jury indicted Smith on charges of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence. She remains in custody without bond, as the case continues toward a scheduled court date.
