COLUMBUS, Ohio — Jodi Tackett, 45, lost her life in a devastating multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 270 early Monday morning, while another individual was left critically injured and one person was taken into custody as investigators worked to piece together the moments leading up to the tragedy.
Authorities with the Columbus Division of Police said officers were dispatched around 2:40 a.m. to the area of I-270 South and Georgesville Road following reports of a serious collision involving multiple vehicles.
Investigators determined that two individuals had been outside a Toyota minivan on the eastbound side of the interstate, changing a tire while positioned on the shoulder. Although they were not in the travel lanes, the situation quickly turned catastrophic.
Police said Tackett was seated in a Toyota Corolla parked approximately 50 feet behind the minivan when a 2011 Audi A4 traveling eastbound lost control and veered off the left side of the roadway. The vehicle struck the rear of the Corolla with significant force, triggering a chain reaction that pushed the car into the minivan and struck one of the individuals working nearby.
Following the impact, the Audi came to a stop. The driver reportedly exited the vehicle and fled on foot but was later located near a Lowe’s store on Georgesville Square Drive.
Tackett was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:51 a.m., while the injured victim was rushed to Grant Medical Center in critical condition.
Authorities confirmed that one person has since been taken into custody as the investigation continues into the fatal crash.
