The Fernley community is mourning the tragic loss of Richard Allen Hightower, 45, while authorities have charged Jeremy Barrett, 40, and James Edward Karol, 44, in connection with his death following a homicide that occurred on June 1, 2026, in Fernley, Nevada. As family members and friends grieve the loss of Hightower, investigators continue working to determine all of the circumstances surrounding the deadly incident.
According to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to reports of a shooting and arrived to find Hightower suffering from injuries. Despite emergency response efforts, he was later pronounced deceased. Investigators quickly launched a coordinated operation involving multiple specialized units to identify and locate those responsible.
Authorities subsequently identified Jeremy Barrett as the suspected shooter and James Edward Karol as an involved suspect. Both men were taken into custody shortly after the incident and have each been charged with Open Murder. Officials confirmed that both suspects are being held in the Lyon County Jail without bail pending further court proceedings.
The investigation involved extensive resources from across the sheriff’s office, including patrol deputies, detectives, the Major Crimes Unit, Special Investigations Unit, SWAT Team, K9 Unit, detention personnel, and partner agencies. Law enforcement officials credited the rapid coordination among these units for the swift arrests made within hours of the initial call.
