HAMILTON ― 18-year-old Eliyahu Schepansky of Lakewood was killed in an early morning motor vehicle collision Sunday in Mercer County, while another teen was left critically injured, according to police.

Authorities with the Hamilton Township, New Jersey Police Department responded around 4 a.m. on April 12 to a two-vehicle crash on Route 130 involving a Mazda CX-3 and a U.S. Postal Service tractor-trailer operated under the United States Postal Service.

Investigators say the Mazda was traveling along the roadway when the collision occurred under circumstances that remain under active investigation. The impact caused catastrophic damage to the vehicle, particularly on the passenger side.

Schepansky, the passenger in the Mazda, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His death has left family, friends, and the Lakewood community in deep mourning as they try to come to terms with the sudden loss of a young life full of promise.

The driver of the Mazda, 19-year-old Mordechai Sokol, also of Lakewood, New Jersey, sustained critical injuries and was transported by ambulance to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, where he remains in serious condition.

Officials have not released additional details about the driver of the tractor-trailer, and no charges have been announced.

The crash scene along Route 130 was temporarily closed while investigators documented evidence and cleared debris, before reopening later in the morning.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the collision, including speed, visibility, and roadway conditions.

Police are asking witnesses to come forward as the investigation remains active and ongoing.
