Deadly Campus Shooting, Former ISIS Supporter Opens Fire at Old Dominion University ROTC Class.
A Virginia college campus was shaken by violence Thursday after a gunman identified as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh opened fire inside a building at Old Dominion University, leaving a retired military officer dead and two ROTC students wounded before the suspect was fatally shot.
Authorities say the shooting occurred inside Constant Hall, where a Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) class was taking place. According to initial reports, Jalloh entered the area and began firing, creating panic among students and staff. Emergency responders and campus police rushed to the scene as the incident unfolded.
Investigators later identified the suspect as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Sierra Leone and a former member of the Army National Guard. Court records indicate that Jalloh had previously been arrested in 2016 by federal authorities for attempting to provide material support to ISIS. At the time, prosecutors said he had purchased weapons, communicated with individuals connected to the extremist group, and explored plans for an attack in the United States.
Jalloh later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison, followed by supervised release. After completing his sentence, he was released in 2024.
During Thursday’s attack, one victim—a retired military officer who was instructing the ROTC class—was fatally wounded. Two ROTC students also sustained injuries during the incident and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The attack ended when law enforcement officers and an armed ROTC student confronted the shooter. Jalloh was shot and killed at the scene, bringing the violent episode to an end.
Authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack as the university community mourns the loss and supports those affected.
