YORK COUNTY: LeByron Cathcart Fatally Shot After Chasing Person Found Inside His Vehicle, Police Say.

ROCK HILL, S.C. — LeByron Cathcart, a 39-year-old Rock Hill resident also known as John L. Redcorn, was fatally shot early Thursday morning after reportedly chasing a person he found inside his vehicle, according to Rock Hill Police. The incident occurred around 4:40 a.m. on June 4 in the 1100 block of Amelia Avenue and has been classified as a homicide investigation.

According to investigators, Cathcart discovered an unknown individual inside his parked vehicle outside his home. When confronted, the suspect allegedly fled on foot. Police say Cathcart pursued the individual through the neighborhood before gunfire was exchanged.

Responding officers found Cathcart suffering from gunshot wounds in the yard of a nearby residence on Amelia Avenue. Despite emergency response efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Rock Hill Police Department, working alongside the York County Sheriff’s Office, is actively searching for the suspect involved in the shooting. Detectives continue to collect evidence and interview witnesses as they work to determine the circumstances leading up to the deadly encounter.

Family members publicly identified the victim as LeByron Cathcart. In a heartfelt social media message, a relative expressed grief over the loss and asked for prayers for both the Cathcart and McClure families during this difficult time.
