Heights Shooting Suspect Faces Federal Charges, Darius Dewayne Hall Accused of Killing Woman, Carjacking Vehicle.
HOUSTON — An 18-year-old man charged in a deadly shooting in Houston’s Heights neighborhood is now facing federal charges in addition to local accusations. Darius Dewayne Hall, previously charged with capital murder, evading arrest, and tampering with physical evidence in Harris County, is now facing federal carjacking and firearms charges, officials confirmed.
The tragic incident unfolded on West 20th Street near Lawrence Street around 11:45 p.m. last Friday. Authorities say a 61-year-old woman was shot while walking back to her apartment after dropping off a friend at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Witnesses reported hearing a scream followed by gunfire. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where she later died.
Federal prosecutors allege that Hall went through the woman’s purse before fleeing in her vehicle. Law enforcement later located the car, leading to a high-speed chase that ended in a crash. Hall reportedly ran from the driver’s side and discarded clothing in an attempt to evade capture, but was taken into custody.
If convicted of the federal charges, Hall could face severe penalties, including life imprisonment or the death penalty for the carjacking charge. The firearms charge carries a minimum of 10 years and up to life in prison, along with a potential fine of $250,000.
Authorities continue to investigate the case, gathering evidence from the scene, witness statements, and the vehicle involved. Hall remains in custody as both federal and local prosecutors review the circumstances surrounding the shooting and subsequent pursuit.
The Heights community continues to mourn the victim while law enforcement urges anyone with additional information to assist in the ongoing investigation.
