Alicia Danielle Lofton Case, Grand Rapids Woman Shot 15 Times While Trying to Escape Husband After Filing for Divorce.
The tragic killing of Alicia Danielle Lofton in 2023 shocked the Grand Rapids community and highlighted the devastating consequences domestic violence can have when a relationship turns dangerous. Just six months after marrying Marcus Lofton, Alicia’s life ended in a brutal attack outside the couple’s home on Union Avenue SE.
On the morning of August 17, 2023, Grand Rapids police responded to reports of gunfire at a residence on the city’s southeast side. When officers arrived, they discovered Alicia Danielle Lofton lying outside the home, fatally wounded. An autopsy later revealed the horrific nature of the attack: Alicia had been shot 15 times, with bullets striking her in the back of the head, shoulder, and thigh. The Kent County Medical Examiner ruled her death a homicide.
Investigators later revealed that Alicia had served Marcus Lofton with divorce papers just one day earlier and had returned her wedding ring, signaling her intent to end the marriage. Prosecutors said tensions escalated the next morning during an argument. Marcus allegedly grabbed Alicia’s pistol from a drawer and attempted to strike her with it, and during the struggle the weapon discharged.
Terrified, Alicia ran to a bedroom and locked the door. Authorities said Marcus forced his way inside and found her attempting to escape through a window. As she climbed out in a desperate effort to flee, prosecutors say Marcus fired repeatedly, killing her.
Marcus Lofton’s first trial ended in a hung jury, but he later pleaded guilty to the killing. A judge sentenced him to 25 to 50 years for second-degree murder, plus two additional years for felony firearm. Alicia’s family continues to grieve the loss of a beloved mother, daughter, and friend. 💔
