Tragic End to Search: Missing New York Teen Thomas Medlin Found Dead Weeks After Disappearance.
Authorities in New York have confirmed that the body of 15-year-old Thomas Medlin, who had been missing for nearly two months, has been recovered, bringing a heartbreaking conclusion to the search for the Long Island teen.
According to the Suffolk County Police Department, Medlin’s body was discovered in the waters near Red Hook on March 7. The discovery followed weeks of investigation into the teenager’s sudden disappearance after he left school earlier this year.
Police said Medlin went missing on January 9 after leaving The Stony Brook School at approximately 3:30 p.m. Surveillance footage showed the teen running toward the nearby Long Island Rail Road station in Stony Brook, where investigators believe he boarded a train heading into Manhattan.
Images released by authorities during the search showed Medlin carrying a backpack and holding a large object while walking along what appeared to be a New York City subway platform. Family members initially feared he may have been traveling to meet someone he had befriended through the popular online game Roblox.
However, investigators later stated that a detailed review of the teen’s online activity—including gaming accounts, social media profiles, and electronic devices—did not uncover any evidence linking those platforms to his disappearance.
Further surveillance footage captured Medlin walking across the Manhattan Bridge later that evening. Authorities say the camera recorded what appeared to be a splash in the water shortly afterward, and Medlin was never seen leaving the bridge.
Police noted that, based on the investigation so far, there is currently no indication of criminal activity connected to the incident. The tragic discovery has left family members and the wider community mourning the loss of a young life taken far too soon.
