CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — A tragic incident that unfolded in early February has taken a significant turn as Cedar Falls police have arrested 21-year-old Willie Otha Rockett of Waterloo in connection with the fatal shooting of Jaye’Mya E’Shay Sudduth, also 21. Authorities confirmed that Rockett now faces a charge of first-degree murder, a Class A felony, in a case that has deeply impacted both the Cedar Falls and Waterloo communities.

The shooting occurred on the evening of Feb. 5 at a residence located at 1029 Maplewood Drive. According to reports, police were dispatched around 7:28 p.m. after a 911 caller reported a violent altercation involving individuals who were known to each other. During the dispute, gunfire erupted, leaving Sudduth with critical injuries.

Emergency responders, including police officers and paramedics, arrived quickly at the scene and attempted life-saving measures. Despite their efforts, Jaye’Mya Sudduth was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving family, friends, and loved ones devastated by the sudden and heartbreaking loss.

Cedar Falls Police Lt. Gavin Carman stated that investigators were able to identify the alleged shooter early in the investigation and reassured the public that there was no ongoing threat to community safety. This development provided some relief, even as the emotional weight of the tragedy continues to be felt.

As the legal process moves forward, the community mourns the life of Jaye’Mya Sudduth, remembering her as a young woman whose life was cut tragically short. Authorities continue to stress the importance of justice while urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
