Barnes County Fatal Crash,26-Year-Old Jamestown Woman Killed After Jeep Strikes Bridge Support on I-94
Authorities are investigating a tragic early morning crash in Barnes County, North Dakota, that claimed the life of a 26-year-old woman from Jamestown. The fatal incident occurred Sunday, March 8, 2026, at approximately 4:09 a.m. along Interstate 94 near mile marker 298.
According to the North Dakota State Patrol, the crash involved a single vehicle—a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Preliminary findings indicate the vehicle was traveling eastbound but was driving in the westbound lanes of the interstate at the time of the incident. Investigators say that as the Jeep approached mile marker 298, the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway.
The vehicle then struck a bridge support located on the north side of the roadway. The impact caused catastrophic damage to the SUV. Emergency crews quickly responded to the scene after the crash was reported, but despite their efforts, the driver was pronounced deceased at the location due to injuries sustained in the collision.
Officials noted that road conditions were considered good at the time of the crash, and weather conditions were described as dark but clear. Authorities also confirmed that the driver was not wearing a seat belt.
Multiple agencies assisted with the response and investigation, including the Valley City Police Department, the Barnes County Sheriff’s Department, Barnes County Ambulance, and the Barnes County Fire Department.
The identity of the driver has not yet been publicly released pending notification of family members. The North Dakota State Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash as officials work to determine what led to the vehicle traveling in the wrong direction on the interstate.
