MOORE COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities have identified the man shot and killed during an exchange of gunfire with deputies on Saturday night as Harvey Hardy, 52. The incident, which unfolded in the town of Cameron, remains under investigation as officials work to piece together the events leading up to the deadly confrontation.

According to the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were alerted around 10:45 p.m. after a man walking along Carthage Street allegedly fired shots, striking a vehicle. Fortunately, the individual inside the vehicle was not injured and was able to provide a description of the suspect.

Deputies soon located a man matching that description. When they attempted to stop him, authorities say he fled on foot and ran toward a nearby building. During the pursuit, investigators report that the suspect fired his weapon, prompting deputies to return fire. Hardy was pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies were injured during the incident.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case, as is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings. Officials will review evidence, interview witnesses, and determine the full circumstances surrounding the encounter.
