Road Rage Suspect Allegedly Smiled and Laughed at Family of Slain 11-Year-Old Boy, Courtroom Tensions Rise in Tragic Henderson Shooting Case

A 22-year-old man accused of killing an 11-year-old boy during a road rage incident on a Las Vegas-area freeway appeared in court Tuesday, as tensions ran high between families in the courtroom. Tyler Matthew Johns faced District Judge Jacqueline Bluth in Clark County District Court, where nearly a dozen relatives of the victim, Brandon Dominguez-Chavarria, were present. Reports from the hearing indicated that Johns’ alleged behavior during the proceeding—smiling, laughing, and calling names toward the grieving family—was brought to the judge’s attention by a victim advocate.

Judge Bluth sternly reminded all parties that courtroom decorum is required and emphasized that such behavior would not be tolerated. Johns’ defense attorney denied the allegations, insisting his client was taking the proceedings seriously.

The tragic incident occurred on the morning of November 14, 2025, on the westbound 215 Beltway near Gibson Road in Henderson. Authorities report that Johns and Brandon’s stepfather, Valente Ayala, were involved in a verbal dispute while driving. The argument escalated, and Johns allegedly fired a handgun into the back of Ayala’s SUV, striking Brandon, who was sitting in the backseat on his way to school. Emergency responders transported the boy to University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, where he was pronounced dead.

Johns was arrested at the scene and now faces first-degree murder with a deadly weapon, as well as counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. He previously pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors have confirmed that the death penalty will not be pursued in the case, leaving the focus on the ongoing trial and the devastating impact on the family.
