Deputy Rick Coyle Critically Wounded in Line of Duty, Prayers Pour In as Veteran Officer Fights for His Life.
An outpouring of prayers and support is growing for Rick Coyle, a veteran law enforcement officer who is now fighting for his life after being critically shot while serving his community in Kentucky. The heartbreaking incident has shaken both his current department and those who knew him from his years of service in Chicago.
Coyle, a Chicago native and former longtime member of the Chicago Police Department SWAT Team, retired and relocated to Kentucky in 2019 with his wife. Continuing his commitment to public service, he later joined the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Department, where he became a school resource officer in 2024—protecting and guiding young students every day.
According to the Kentucky State Police, the shooting occurred Thursday evening as Deputy Coyle responded to a home in the Sturgis area to serve emergency guardianship paperwork. During the call, gunfire erupted. Reports indicate Coyle was struck in the head and also took a round to his vest.
The suspect reportedly exchanged gunfire with responding officers and was fatally shot at the scene. Meanwhile, Deputy Coyle was airlifted to a hospital in Evansville, Indiana, where he remains in critical condition.
