Two Iowa women lost their lives early Sunday morning in a devastating crash along Interstate 64 near the Wayne-Jefferson County line, just east of Mt. Vernon. Authorities have identified the victims as 61-year-old Carmie Sills and her passenger, 61-year-old Theresa Leibold, both of Ames.
According to preliminary reports, the vehicle was traveling along Interstate 64 when, for reasons still under investigation, it left the roadway. The car then struck a tree head-on with significant force. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene, but despite their efforts, both women were pronounced dead.
