According to the Iowa State Patrol, 14-year-old Robert Orton of Palmyra, Missouri, was killed in the crash after the semi-truck he was traveling in was struck by a train at a railroad crossing.

The fatal accident took place Wednesday on Highway 21 between the communities of Brooklyn and Victor. Investigators reported that the semi-truck was being driven by Robert’s father, 38-year-old Michael Orton. Preliminary findings indicate that the driver failed to yield at the railroad crossing, resulting in the train colliding with the vehicle.

Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene, but Robert Orton was pronounced dead at the location due to injuries sustained in the crash. His death has deeply saddened both local residents and members of his Missouri community. Michael Orton suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to University Hospitals in Iowa City for treatment. The impact of the collision was significant, affecting not only those inside the truck but also the train crew. Authorities said the train’s engineer and conductor sustained minor injuries and received medical treatment. Fortunately, no passengers were reported on the freight train.

The crash also caused substantial damage to railway infrastructure. Approximately 20 train cars derailed following the collision, creating a large debris field and prompting an extensive cleanup operation. Transportation officials have warned that Highway 21 could remain closed for several days while crews work to remove wreckage, repair damaged tracks, and ensure the area is safe for travel.

The Iowa State Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officials are urging motorists to exercise caution at railroad crossings and to always obey warning signals and crossing regulations. The tragic loss of a young life serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of railroad safety and vigilance on the road.
