Old Dominion University Shooting, ROTC Students Subdue Suspect After Deadly Attack.
NORFOLK, Virginia — A horrifying incident at Old Dominion University (ODU) on Thursday left one person dead and two others injured before a group of ROTC students intervened, subduing and killing the shooter, the FBI confirmed. Authorities identified the suspect as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, who previously pleaded guilty in 2016 to attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State.
During a news conference, Dominique Evans, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Norfolk field office, said Jalloh shouted “Allahu Akbar” before opening fire in a campus classroom. The ROTC students displayed “extreme bravery and courage,” Evans added, stepping in to prevent further loss of life. According to officials, the students subdued the suspect and rendered him dead without the use of firearms.
FBI Director Kash Patel labeled the shooting an act of terrorism, noting that the rapid response of the students prevented the situation from escalating. Authorities have not released additional details about the identities of the victims or the precise circumstances of the confrontation, citing the ongoing investigation.
The ODU community has been left in shock as law enforcement continues to process the scene and provide support to students, staff, and families affected by the tragedy. University officials are coordinating with the FBI and local authorities to ensure the safety of all campus members and to offer counseling services.
This incident highlights both the unpredictability of active shooter situations and the profound impact that decisive, courageous action by bystanders can have in saving lives during acts of violence.
