The Belhaven community is mourning the tragic loss of Lemonte Crandall, 55, who was found deceased following a shooting incident on Elm Street that has prompted an active homicide investigation by local and state authorities.
According to a statement released by the Belhaven Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 900 block of Elm Street at approximately 8:04 p.m. on June 15, 2026, after receiving reports of gunshots in the area. Upon arrival, responding officers discovered Lemonte Crandall, a resident of Elm Street, suffering from fatal injuries. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Law enforcement officers immediately secured the area and began processing the scene. Deputies from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office assisted Belhaven Police as investigators worked to gather evidence and determine the circumstances surrounding the deadly incident.
Due to the serious nature of the case, the Belhaven Police Department requested assistance from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI). Detectives and SBI agents are actively pursuing leads and conducting interviews as they work to establish what led to the fatal shooting.
Authorities have indicated that investigators believe the incident was isolated and that there is no known ongoing threat to the public. However, officials emphasized that the investigation remains open and ongoing, and no additional details have been released at this time.
