TOLEDO, Ohio — A teenager accused of fatally shooting 20-year-old Salvador Ruiz over the Independence Day weekend in 2025 will face trial as an adult, according to newly filed court documents. Reon Green, who was 16 at the time of the incident, was indicted by a Lucas County grand jury on March 12, 2026. The indictment includes two counts of murder, two counts of felonious assault, and weapons-related charges.

The shooting occurred shortly after midnight on July 5, 2025, near Platt Street and 1st Street, close to the intersection of Front and Main. Police responding to the scene found Ruiz inside a vehicle suffering from at least one gunshot wound. First responders transported him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Authorities noted that another person was present in the vehicle at the time but was unharmed.

Toledo Police issued a murder warrant for Green on July 9, 2025, and he was formally booked on July 15. Prosecutors cited the severity of the charges and the circumstances of the shooting in their decision to try Green as an adult.

The case has drawn significant attention in Toledo, highlighting ongoing concerns about youth involvement in violent crime and the justice system’s handling of serious offenses committed by minors. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, while the court prepares for pre-trial proceedings. The upcoming trial is expected to bring both legal resolution and a measure of closure to the family and friends of Salvador Ruiz, who continue to mourn his untimely death.
