PENNINGTON COUNTY, S.D. — A shooting at the Central States Fairgrounds on Sunday morning has left one man hospitalized and a suspected gunman dead, prompting an ongoing investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies. Authorities identified the suspect as 58-year-old John Troy Lee of Rapid City, whose death occurred after a law enforcement search that followed the violent incident.
According to officials, emergency responders were called to the Central States Fairgrounds at approximately 8:45 a.m. on June 7, 2026, after reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, officers discovered an adult male suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where he remains under medical care. Investigators say John Troy Lee was identified as the suspected shooter shortly after the incident.
