The Jefferson County community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Donovan Reid Hanberry, a 20-year-old Bessemer resident whose life was tragically cut short during a reported robbery at a Birmingham hotel. Family members, friends, and loved ones are now left grieving the loss of a young man whose future held countless possibilities.
According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, Hanberry died after suffering gunshot wounds during an incident that occurred on June 5 at the InTown Suites on Commons Drive in Birmingham. Authorities reported that the shooting took place at approximately 4:00 p.m., and despite emergency response efforts, Hanberry was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:27 p.m.
The tragic event prompted an extensive investigation by Birmingham police detectives. Following the collection of evidence and witness statements, investigators presented the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office for review. After examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting, prosecutors determined that the use of deadly force was legally justified. As a result, no criminal charges are expected, and the investigation has been officially closed unless new information emerges.
While legal conclusions may bring closure to the investigation, they do little to ease the pain felt by those who knew and loved Donovan. His passing serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly lives can be changed by violence and tragedy. Friends and family members continue to reflect on his life, remembering the moments they shared and the impact he had on those around him.
As the community processes this devastating loss, many are extending condolences and support to the Hanberry family during this difficult time. Donovan Reid Hanberry’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, and his loss will not be forgotten by the community that now mourns alongside his loved ones.
