emma McGrath Opens Beauty Training Salon After Surviving Brutal Shooting.
A woman from East Belfast who survived a near-fatal shooting more than a decade ago has turned her painful experience into a mission to inspire and empower others. Jemma McGrath, now 36, has opened a beauty training salon designed to help women pursue their ambitions and rebuild their confidence.
McGrath’s life changed dramatically in September 2013 when she was shot multiple times and left critically injured. She was rushed to Royal Victoria Hospital, where doctors performed one of the longest operations ever carried out at the hospital in an effort to save her life. The injuries she sustained were severe, including a broken arm, a broken leg, and multiple internal injuries that required extensive surgery. Surgeons used pins and screws to stabilize parts of her body as she began the long road to recovery.
The physical healing was only part of the challenge. McGrath later spoke openly about struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder after the attack. She experienced intense panic attacks that made her feel as though she might be dying. The emotional toll was compounded by earlier struggles in her life, including drug use during her youth and the grief she experienced after losing her father.
Determined not to let her past define her future, McGrath focused on rebuilding her life and finding a purpose that could help others. Her newly established beauty training salon aims to provide opportunities for women who want to learn professional skills and build careers in the beauty industry.
Today, McGrath’s story is one of resilience and transformation—showing how strength, determination, and hope can emerge even after life’s darkest moments.
