Lima Court Appearance, Truck Driver Charged in Deadly Crash That Killed Father and Son.
LIMA, Ohio — The truck driver charged in a deadly crash that claimed the lives of a Lima father and his 11-year-old son appeared in court Thursday to face multiple serious charges. Yvio Michel, 53, of Boynton Beach, Florida, is facing two counts of negligent homicide, two counts of vehicular manslaughter, and a charge of failure to maintain an assured clear distance.
The charges are connected to a six-vehicle collision that occurred on Interstate 75 on February 28, which tragically killed Hurshel Gipson, 52, and his son, while leaving several others injured. Michel pleaded not guilty during his court appearance, signaling that the case is expected to move through the legal system with detailed investigation and proceedings.
Court officials noted that Michel is not a U.S. citizen and has limited English-speaking abilities, which may affect certain procedural aspects of the trial. The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash, and the tractor-trailer involved remains in the possession of law enforcement as part of the ongoing inquiry.
While the case is pending, Michel will be allowed to reside in Florida. His bond was modified to $25,000, and he is explicitly prohibited from operating any motor vehicle during this time. Authorities have emphasized that the legal process will continue while investigators work to determine the specific factors that led to the tragic crash.
The incident has left the Lima community grieving the loss of a father and son, and many are closely following the case as justice seeks to address the devastating consequences of that February collision.
