The Parma City School District community is grappling with profound grief following a devastating incident on Monday afternoon. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office has officially identified the deceased student as 18-year-old Marissa R. Rand, a resident of Parma, Ohio.
The tragedy unfolded at approximately 2:10 p.m. at Valley Forge High School, located at 9999 Independence Blvd. According to reports from school officials and law enforcement, the senior student sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound within the school’s cafeteria. Despite the rapid response of emergency personnel who rushed to the scene, Marissa Rand passed away later that afternoon.
Immediate Response and Safety
Parma Police Public Information Officer Scott Traxler confirmed that the incident involved a single gunshot and a single student. In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement worked quickly to secure the building, eventually confirming that there was no active threat to other students or staff members. However, the emotional toll on the student body—many of whom were present during the final periods of the school day—is immeasurable.

In the wake of such a heartbreaking event, the district has prioritized mental health resources. Crisis intervention teams and grief counselors have been made available to support students, faculty, and families as they navigate this trauma.
