SUMMERVILLE, S.C. — What began as a routine ride among teenagers turned into a devastating tragedy that claimed the life of 17-year-old Ma’Davion N. Smalls on the evening of April 16, 2026. The incident, which unfolded near Summerville High School and John McKissick Stadium, has left a community grieving and searching for answers.
According to investigators, police did not initially respond to a shooting call. Instead, officers pulled over a speeding 2020 Chrysler 300 near Midland Parkway and Benton’s Lodge Road. Inside the vehicle, they found Ma’Davion in the backseat, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was unresponsive and later pronounced dead.
Authorities say the shot was fired from inside the same vehicle. Reports indicate that a 17-year-old driver had been handling a firearm—a PSA Dagger 9mm pistol—before turning toward the backseat and firing. According to statements gathered during the investigation, the act was described as intentional. Another passenger in the car reportedly confirmed that the driver had been handling the weapon moments before aiming it.
Following the shooting, investigators say the driver attempted to dispose of the firearm by throwing it from the vehicle. The weapon was later identified as stolen.
The suspect has since been arrested and faces multiple charges, including murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, possession of a stolen handgun, and unlawful sale or delivery of a handgun.
As the case moves forward, the loss of Ma’Davion N. Smalls stands as a painful reminder of how quickly lives can be changed forever.
